Giants name a trio of captains

Triple premiership player Luke Power as well as two of their star recruits in Callan Ward and Phil Davis have been named co-captains for the Greater Western Sydney Giants for their inaugural AFL season.

The Giants decision to go with three captains instead of the traditional one goes with the current trend in the AFL which was started by their cross town rivals in the Sydney Swans and also used by the likes of Power’s formal club in Brisbane as well as Melbourne.

Inaugural Giants senior coach Kevin Sheedy said that he pleased that he has adopted the Swans model in terms of their captaincy.

“You look at and admire what other interstate clubs have done,” said Sheedy at a packed media conference in the Sydney CBD on Tuesday.

“When you look at the Swans’ decision to have three captains in a city as big as Sydney, six million people, with players like [Brett] Kirk and [Adam] Goodes and Barry Hall, they always had three.”

“The constant was Kirk at the time over those years that took them to those Grand Finals and sometimes you can look at what clubs have done really well and learn from that lesson.”

“They’ve helped set up a very strong footy club, the character of the Swans’ group, that’s something we had to learn pretty quickly about this city.”

“We wanted to pick some pretty strong people to lead our club.”

Power, 32 is the older of the trio as he is a veteran of 282 games and is also the Giants forward line coach; whilst tough in midfielder Callan Ward and Phil Davis, both 21 have been installed the responsibility of the leading the 18th AFL club in their inaugural season.

The trio will lead a leadership group which is made of recruits with the likes of former Port Adelaide pair Chad Cornes and Dean Brogan, high profile recruit Tom Scully as well as fellow midfielder Rhys Palmer and ex-Carlton forward Setanta O’hAilpin.
