Scorchers withstand Heat

The Brisbane Heat’s horror start to the 2011/2012 Big Bash League has continued with the side suffering yet another loss, this time by ten runs to the Perth Scorchers at the WACA Ground in Perth.

The Perth Scorchers won the toss and elected to bat first with Herschelle Gibbs and skipper Marcus North opening the batting for a Scorchers outfit desperate for another win in the revamped Big Bash League tournament with the pair blasting their way to an impressive opening stand of eighty before Dan Christian picked up the wicket of the inform Herschelle Gibbs for 38 from 22.

North combined with Mitchell Marsh however the pair were only able to add a further eight runs before the Scorchers skipper was making his way back to the pavilion bowled by Robert van der Merwe for 40 from 29 deliveries.

Dumped Australian batsmen Simon Katich added just nine before he was dismissed by Nathan Hauritz, and when Luke Ronchi (2 from 3), Nathan Rimmington (7 from 10) and Brad Hogg (2 from 2) the good start by the openers had been brought undone by a desperate Brisbane Heat outfit still searching for their first win of the tournament.

The Perth Scorchers finishing on eight for 162 from their allotted twenty overs.

Chris Lynn fell for just four from seven deliveries, however when Peter Forrest joined Matthew Hayden at the crease the runs began to flow as the Brisbane Heat chased down the competitive Perth Scorchers total. The former Australian test opener Hayden blasting himself five boundaries on his way to 33 from 26 deliveries before he was stumped by Luke Ronchi.

Desperate to keep in touch with the rising run rate Andrew Robinson was forced to chase almost everything for runs and it proved costly when he fell to Ben Edmondson for nine from eight deliveries.

Peter Forrest survived to bring up a half century despite wickets falling around him, however with the run rate now out of reach the game fizzled out as the Perth Scorchers secured a ten run victory.
