Murphy wins physical encounter

Kiwi racing legend Greg Murphy has made it two from two in the inaugural round of the V8 SuperTourers at the Hampton Downs circuit after avoiding the bumping and grinding behind him to take his second victory of the weekend.

The Mike Pero Mortgages-backed Holden Commodore took the chequered flag after the 39-year-old racing veteran held off a fast finishing Jonny Reid, and Kayne Scott to take his second victory in as many races as he secured a comprehensive lead in the early championship points.

It was carnage towards the back of the pact as a clash between Craig Baird and Ant Pederson provided the first major incident in the new racing category, while a wild mid-pack spin by Scott McLaughlin ensured fans had plenty to cheer about.

The result was exactly what Greg Murphy was looking for after yet another poor start to the rolling start racing with the pole sitter dropping back to as far as third before making his way back into the lead before not looking back and taking the victory.

“It’s great to see everyone here again,” Murphy said to the crowd after the race.

“Kayne made a great start, I’ll have to learn from them. Hopefully this afternoon we can have another good race.”

Murphy held off Jonny Reid who finished second, and Kayne Scott who finished off the podium. Andy Booth, Eddie Bell, John McIntyre, Andy Knight, Paul Manuell, Ant Pedersen, and Steven Richards rounded out the top ten.
