SuperTourers test day a success
It is seen as the revolution of motorsport in New Zealand, and the February 10 test day by the competition held at Hampton Downs has been hailed a massive success after all sixteen cars making up the inaugural championship took to the track to blow out system cobwebs ahead of next weekends first round to be held at the same event.
While no official times were recorded on the Hampton Downs circuit where the V8 SuperTourers will kick start their inaugural season next weekend all sixteen cars hit the track for their first official test day with the entire event hailed a success by the competitions Media Manager Richard Gee and drivers alike.
With a number of New Zealand based drivers on show throughout the championship including the likes of John McIntryre, Greg Murphy, Steve Richards, Craig Baird and Johnny Reid it is shaping up of a who’s who of New Zealand motorsport with a number of V8 Supercar drivers making the jump to the SuperTourers – whose season has been designed to not interfere with the premier Australian motorsport category – with the cars being cheaper to run, and giving them an opportunity to drive a car that will be similar to the Car of the Future that will debut in the Australian V8 Supercars from 2013.
The test day, which was primarily a media meet and greet day, was the first time that all of the cars were on the track at the same time despite most of the teams previously holding a public test day to launch their cars in the build-up to the occasion.
Due to the weather the day was extended by half an hour when rain interfered with the two two-hour sessions, however despite the decline in weather organizers still hailed the event a major success as they prepare for the season launch next weekend.
